This module of the ATI described the ten concepts of nursing which are: client-centered care, interdisciplinary care, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, informatics, safety, client education, professionalism, leadership, and priority setting. The use of the various concepts helps support the knowledge and clinical judgement used within nursing. I was familiar with the different ideas from prior classes. Some of the questions asked within the ATI module were good refreshers, but there were a couple questions that stood out to me. One question asked what actions would be appropriate for a nurse when communicating with a client who has aphasia. I didn’t think by asking the client to blink their eyes to have them indicate “yes” or “no” could be a useful method. It’s a helpful tool to carry with me in the future when dealing with patients who have difficulty communicating verbally. It tied in perfectly with the nursing concept of client education. Another question taught me that speech pathologists could help with a client’s swallowing issues after a cerebrovascular accident. My understanding was that they only helped with social communication and speech, not swallowing as well. It was a great question that tied with the nursing concept of interdisciplinary care. Understanding what the different healthcare team members are capable of allows us to refer patients to those that can help better.
Great, those are two wonderful examples of learning from the modules. I’m glad that some was review, but these are two pearls that you will take with you. The use of the blinking yes and no is often used in the ICU with intubated patients and can provide some good baseline information.
