Career Development

The movie, Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now, gave insights into why people chose the specific fields of nursing they did. I felt inspired by some of the stories told by the nurses and can’t wait to have a positive impact on my patients. Throughout several parts of the video, people mentioned understanding who you are and your purpose. I’m grateful to understand who I am and the opportunity to choose what I want to do.

The movie described how nurses look at patients holistically and have a broad knowledge of every aspect of patient care. It explained how nurses should have the desire to seek improvements continually. Something new I learned from the video was what a guardian nurse is. Before the video, I’ve never heard of a guardian nurse. The footage described guardian nurses as patient advocates who help families and patients deal with a new diagnosis, consultation, treatment, appointment visits, or billing issues.

To prepare for my interview, I plan to research the organizations mission, culture, location, computer system, specific job responsibilities, and tuition reimbursements. Another way I can prepare is by working on my “brand,” which I feel I’m aware of.

My strengths are evident in my past experiences at UNE. Considering I studied in the Doctor of Pharmacy program at UNE, I learned how medication errors are a significant issue in the healthcare industry. As a healthcare worker, I would speak two languages and have a broader medication knowledge to help mitigate two important reasons why errors occur: medication administrations and misinterpretations. With my multicultural background, I will relate to more people in a state that’s been becoming increasingly diverse. I am understanding, patient, empathetic, and open-minded.

My biggest challenge was coping with a surgery I had during my educational career. I stayed persistent with nearly two years of physical therapy, balancing appointments, school, and persevered to gain solid clinical and work experience. This challenge helped me grow in ways I couldn’t imagine – especially finding my purpose and managing my time. I’m thankful to be back to a point where I’m myself again.

  1. Munib, prospective employers seek the qualities you describe in overcoming your challenges – resilience, perseverance, and persistence. They may ask about any current weaknesses you may have – draw on your past experiences to emphasize how you address those weaknesses.

    1. A weakness I have is that I sometimes focus on the details too much. I’ve learned to cope with it over time by taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.
