ATI Module 3: Priority Setting Framework

Image from: https://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html

This module of the ATI described nursing frameworks used to prioritize situations. The seven structures it mentioned were: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the nursing process, ABC’s, safety/risk reduction, least restrictive/least invasive, survival potential, and acute/urgent/unstable vs. chronic/nonurgent/stable findings. Multiple frameworks can be used depending on the situation. The information in the module was familiar with previous classes, but it was a great review.

There was a question regarding a nurse preparing to administer oral medication to give to a patient with unilateral weakness, following a cerebrovascular accident. It was related to applying either Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, ABC’s, or the safety and risk reduction framework. An interesting technique I learned within that question was the chin tuck posture for patients at risk for aspiration. You have the patient put their head and chin down when swallowing. It’s something worth carrying on with me in the future.
